Launch of the Network of Excellence "Open Philosophies for Associative Autopoietic Digital Ecosystems"

On June, 29th and 30th, 2006, took place the kick-off meeting of the Network of Excellence OOPALS "Open Philosophies for Associative Autopoietic Digital Ecosystems ", coordinated by the at the London School of Economics and Political Science. This 4-years long project is part of the cluster of projects on Digital Ecosystem, and aims at establishing the teorethical framework for ecosystem approach.

2nd Concertation meeting of Digital Ecosystems Cluster

2nd DE Cluster Meeting : Bruxelles, 9-10 February 2006
The second Cluster Concertation Meeting of the "Digital Ecosystem Cluster" took place in Brussels on 9-10 February 2006. The cluster now has a critical mass, and some projects are quite advanced, therefore it is expected to end up with a plan of some tangible common actions. The Multistake-holder process of the Innovation Ecosystem Initiative has been launched.

DBE presented at WSIS

November: World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) 15-19 November 2005, Tunis KramPal Expo.
The Digital Business Ecosystem project has been presented at the WSIS-ICT4all exhibition at the EU booth, among the 10 EU flagship projects against the digital divide.
The European initiative and approach of digital ecosystems has raised high interest in most of the countries of Mercosur (e.g. Brasil, Venezuela, Argentina) and of the South-east Asia. The initiative of cultura viva of Brasil (with its Pontos de Cultura), which addresses cultural and multimedia production, has a similar approach and common initiatives and events will be activated.

Alpha version of DBE studio released

e-Business conference: The way forward, session on digital ecosystems

Session "Digital Ecosystems for SMEs: roots, multiplier effects and regional growth stakes"

The European Commission is holding a conference in Cambridge on 5-6 December to bring together policy-makers and stakeholders from across the European e-business community. The aim is to take stock of initiatives launched in recent years and to help establish priorities for future policy actions.

The Conference will take stock of policy initiatives promoting the take-up of e-business practices and the status of e-business uptake; look at recent developments in the area of e-skills and at progress in removing cross-border legal barriers for electronic business; review the relationship between standards and e-business; take note of initial experiences of the "digital ecosystem" approach for activating networks of SMEs; and help pave the way for future e-business policy developments.

OMG approved SBVR to become a final adopted specification

The OMG Business Enterprise Integration Domain Task Force and Architecture Board on September 12, 2005, approved the Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) to become a final adopted specification of the OMG. Based on a fusion of linguistics, logic, and computer science, SBVR provides a way to capture specifications in natural language and represent them in formal logic so they can be machine-processed.
SBVR is a landmark specification of the OMG, as the first OMG specification to incorporate the use of natural language in modeling and the first to explicitly provide a model of formal logic. The specificaiton will now enter the finalization phase, expected to take several months, for formatting and final editing before being published as an OMG formal specification. Implementations of SBVR are now underway or planned by different organizations.

The Digital Business Ecosystem (DBE), a project of the European Commission Framework Program 6, has adopted SBVR for its Business Modeling Language. It is a goal of the DBE to enable small and medium sized enterprises to register their business and product offerings and conduct business over the Internet.
SBVR is expected to allow SMEs to express their business in the natural language, making a significant contribution to the interaction capability of the digital ecosystems.

Work on SBVR began in January 2002, when Stan Hendryx, Hendryx & Associates, proposed creation of a business rules track in the OMG and founded and lead the Business Rules Working Group. The group developed a Request for Proposal for Business Semantics of Business Rules, which was issued by the OMG in June 2003. In July 2003, the Business Rules Team was organized, an international consortium of business rules experts, logicians, linguists, computer scientists, and consultants, to work across these disciplines to produce SBVR.

The SBVR work complements the OMG/W3C ongoing work on Ontology Definition Metamodel (OMD), since they have only a partial overlap and have different expressiveness capabilities. The interoperability between SBVR and ODM is one of the future research activities. Also research communities (including W3C and OMG) are actively working in order to include SBVR features into ODM and vice-versa.

Roadmap for Open ICT Ecosystems published by Harward

A panel of government, NGO and industry representatives, under the aegis of the Harvard University Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, drafted a "Roadmap for Open ICT Ecosystems", which has been released in September 2005.
The report outlines the important policy objectives governments should establish to ensure that public administrations have open ICT infrastructures and the practical steps which need to be taken.

June-2005 - Kracov (Poland) EISCO 2005 (European Information society Conference of local and regional governments) ended with THE CRACOW DECLARATION ON i2010 LOCAL AGENDA: i2010 in Europe and the promotion of digital solidarity among the cities of the world"; it includes 10 goals, among them: "Digital ecosystems and training centers".

Goal 6 – Digital ecosystems and training centres Each Local and Regional Authority will promote the creation of digital ecosystems within their territory to stimulate innovation and the participation of local entrepreneurs in the global market, as well as support the use of electronic commerce and other digital business tools by micro and small enterprises through adequate regional centres of competence and training.

The Digital Ecosystem research Vision: 2010 and Beyond

It has been published the position paper "The Digital Ecosystem research Vision: 2010 and Beyond", resulting from the cycle of workshops of 2005 and from the on-line debate among the digital ecosystem community.

This paper suggests a set of research problems to be undertaken in the coming Framework Programmes (CIP, FP7, …) and their operationalisation. The intent of the paper is to contribute to the definition of the ICT research priorities needed to arrive at a European concept of digital ecosystems that support SMEs and regional development.
Recent studies converge towards a research framework that will integrate social science and natural science questions and concerns within an advanced programme of research in computer science and software engineering. The objective of the advanced research programme outlined is to develop an integrated ICT development and ICT adoption strategy that will find its natural expression in the different regions of Europe, advancing them toward the Lisbon Strategy on the Information Society and the Knowledge Economy.
